Competition is everywhere: Worship Khanna

Pati Brahmachari actor Worship Khanna is one of those rare voices in the industry who speaks with refreshing clarity. Whether it’s about the growing competition from influencers or the repetitive content on TV, he brings a perspective grounded in both experience and curiosity.

“In today’s world, competition is everywhere,” he said when asked about the rising number of influencers stepping into acting. “Of course, but not just influencers—competition is everywhere. And honestly, if there’s no competition, then what’s the fun? Life would become monotonous.”

Instead of resisting change, Worship embraces the constant evolution of the entertainment industry. “I believe competition should always exist. Today it’s influencers; tomorrow it’ll be someone else. Everyone should get a chance. And we should be ready to lace up our shoes and keep running the race. I accept everyone as competition, and I want to live that fight, that race,” he said.

As someone deeply involved with television, Worship is also vocal about where the medium needs to evolve. “I think the problem is once something works, every show starts doing the same thing. If one show shows a mother-in-law dying and coming back as a spirit, then suddenly all shows will have dead mothers-in-law returning,” he said.

For him, the lack of originality is the real crisis. “Nowadays, I see everyone wearing the same colors and the same jewelry for Haldi or Mehendi functions. Was this the case 15-20 years ago? Back then, TV would create new ideas. Now, it feels like everyone is just copying trends. I think we’re lacking because we are blindly following each other. We should create from our own minds,” he said.

He pointed to iconic shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as examples of originality that defined an era. “When Kyunki was made, did anyone copy someone else? No! So come with new ideas. Take risks. Maybe you’ll set a trend. I feel this is where TV content lacks—the repeat formats. All channels follow each other. That needs to stop,” he said.

Worship is equally open when it comes to his career choices on OTT platforms. While many actors carve out niches for themselves, he takes a more organic route. “There is nothing decided. Even I don’t know as an actor what can come out from within me. When I came here, I cried a lot. I didn’t know what kind of work I wanted to do. I got comedy. I did comedy. People appreciated it a lot. I didn’t know I could even do comedy,” he said.

He has since played both humorous and negative characters with success. “Then I got a negative role. I did that. People appreciated it a lot too, saying, ‘Wow, what a negative role he played!’ So, we really don’t know what can come out from inside us. That’s why I have not kept anything fixed or planned for myself, like, ‘I only want to do this,’” he said.

His philosophy is simple: stay open. “Whatever comes into my bag, I will keep doing it. And I will do it with full honesty no matter what kind of character it is. Now how that character feels to you and how it feels to my audience—you will be the ones to decide that. So I am open to all possibilities.” Worship ended.
