Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat address on December 28, highlighted inspiring grassroots success stories from Manipur, showcasing how traditional skills, when combined with innovation and vision, can transform local economies and empower communities.

During the address, the Prime Minister praised Margaret Ramtharsiem from Churachandpur, whose work with bamboo and wood has evolved from a small handicraft practice into a thriving enterprise. Starting with traditional craftsmanship, Ramtharsiem built a production unit that now employs more than 50 local artisans and supplies handcrafted products to several states, including Delhi. Her journey, Modi noted, reflects the potential of indigenous art forms to create sustainable livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage.

The Prime Minister also lauded Chokhone Krichena from Senapati district, who shifted from conventional farming to floriculture. By diversifying crops and connecting local produce to broader markets, Krichena demonstrated how innovation in agriculture can open new income avenues for rural communities. Her efforts have helped showcase Manipur’s agricultural potential beyond traditional boundaries.

In his remarks, Modi emphasised that these stories represent a larger national movement where local talent and traditional knowledge are being harnessed to build self-reliant communities. He underlined that economic empowerment rooted in culture and local resources not only strengthens livelihoods but also fosters confidence and pride at the grassroots level.

The examples from Manipur, the Prime Minister said, illustrate how “vocal for local” initiatives are translating into real-world impact—encouraging entrepreneurship, generating employment, and ensuring that growth reaches even the most remote regions of the country.
