“Kids need to understand that becoming independent doesn’t mean giving up on your family or your roots,” says Gulki Joshi

Gulki Joshi on becoming independent

She stars in Zee Theatre’s teleplay ‘Kaalchakra’ which explores intergenerational conflicts

Gulki Joshi was first seen in Zee TV’s show ‘Phir Subah Hogi’ (2023) and has gone on to be one of the most enduring stars of the small screen and theatre. Be it Zee Theatre’s teleplay ‘Purush’ opposite Ashutosh Rana or the social drama ‘Kaalchakra’, she has proven her versatility as an actor.

She plays an important role in ‘Kaalchakra’ where a couple unhappy with the way they are treated by their children, publish a newspaper advertisement asking if someone would like to adopt them. To everybody’s surprise, they get a response.

Written by playwright Jaywant Dalvi whose play ‘Sandhya Chhaya’ also dealt with a similar theme, ‘Kaalchakra’, says Gulki, very poignantly depicts a multitude of issues. She says, “I think as soon as a child becomes an adult, they should have their own individual life. Parents need to know that they are not being abandoned and kids need to understand as well that becoming independent doesn’t mean giving up on your family or your roots. There has to be a middle path where everybody can sit and have an adult conversation. Independence and attachment can have equal importance in a family.”

She cites the example of her own family and says, “We talk about anything and everything under the sun. Even when we are far apart, sometimes just texting each other “I miss you” is more than enough.”

Discussing her passion for theatre, Gulki says, “I think theatre as a performing art is a lot tougher as a medium than all the others because you get to do it only once. You don’t get a retake and your voice and your expressions should reach the person sitting in the last row. It’s a lot more energy-consuming. Most importantly the instant reaction that you get from the live audience is addictive like a drug.”

As for teleplays like ‘Kaalchakra’ that deal with largely overlooked subjects, Gulki observes, “Teleplays, I think, are a brilliant way of reintroducing our generation to theatre because it is forgetting about the power and beauty that theatre has. Teleplays are a great way to connect them to some powerful narratives.”

Directed for the stage by Om Katare and filmed by Ishan Trivedi, the Zee Theatre teleplay also stars Om Katare, Paromita Chatterjee, Parvin Dabas, Chandana Sharma, Anand Goradiya, Sandeep Dhabale and Ashok Sharma.

Watch it on 15th Feb 2024 on Airtel Spotlight, Dish TV Rangmanch Active and D2H Rangmanch Active.
