CorCom Declares Shutdown, Calls for Boycott Amid President Murmu’s Upcoming Manipur Visit Featured NE News Regional Beat by Akanksha - December 10, 20250 The Coordination Committee (CorCom), a coalition of banned insurgent groups operating in Manipur, has announced a statewide shutdown coinciding with the scheduled visit of President Droupadi Murmu on December 11 and 12. The shutdown is set to begin at 1:00 pm on December 11 and will remain in effect for the duration of her stay. According to the announcement, essential services such as healthcare, fire services, water supply, and ritual-related activities will remain exempt. CorCom’s Statement and Concerns In a statement attributed to its media coordinator, M. Shak-Hen, CorCom claimed that the President’s visit for the Nupi Lal observance on December 12 would not support peace-building or development efforts in the state. The group alleged that the visit might heighten tensions and described it as politically sensitive. The statement further referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur earlier on September 13, characterising it as part of a central policy approach the group disagrees with. CorCom claimed that current policies have contributed to instability, displacement, and loss of life within the state — assertions that remain unverified and reflect the group’s perspective. Historical Context Raised by the Group CorCom also invoked the legacy of the Nupi Lal movements of 1904 and 1939, two significant uprisings led by Manipuri women against colonial-era decisions. The group argued that the President’s involvement in commemorative events could, in their view, reinterpret the historical significance of these movements. Historians, however, often emphasise that Nupi Lal commemorations today aim to honour women’s leadership and resilience in Manipur’s social history. Shutdown and Public Advisory The coalition urged residents to boycott the President’s visit and observe the shutdown, framing it as a symbolic protest. The shutdown is expected to continue until the President departs the state, though essential services will operate uninterrupted. Government Response Expected As of now, the Manipur government and security agencies are preparing for the President’s scheduled programmes, which include paying tribute to Nupi Lal at a state event. More details on security arrangements, public advisories, and potential transport restrictions are expected in the coming days.
