Writer-Producer Bahnishikha Das: “Cinema Can Play an Important Role in Breaking Stigma Around Mental Health” Featured Funtainment by Akanksha - October 11, 20250 As the world observes World Mental Health Day on October 10, writer and producer Bahnishikha Das, who recently made waves with her Amazon Prime web series Naam Gum Jayega, reflects on the importance of nurturing one’s inner balance amidst the chaos of the entertainment industry. Deeply involved with her project since its inception, Bahnishikha believes that firstly one needs to understand that mental health comprises not just of a situation of specific mental illness but also of overall mental well being. Just as even if one is not physically ill, one needs to work towards being healthy consciously . Mental wellness too begins with conscious attention and self-awareness, along with constant efforts towards a balanced mental state. “For me, World Mental Health Day means consciously dedicating time to think about one’s own mental health state and how to achieve the best possible version of oneself mentally , besides being aware of the mental health of our loved ones around,” says Bahnishikha. “It’s also about looking around, understanding what is being done to promote awareness, and contributing to it in whatever way possible.”The entertainment world is known for its long hours, unpredictability, and constant creative pressure — something Bahnishikha has learned to navigate with structure and mindful habits. “Yes, it can get difficult to maintain balanced mental health in our industry, but self-discipline and boundaries go a long way,” she shares. “I make it a point to be away from my phone after a certain time at night and not work on Sundays unless absolutely necessary. Sundays are for my personal space — for myself, my family and friends, and life beyond work.”Her love for Indian festivals also plays a part in keeping her grounded. “Even amidst hectic days, I love celebrating festivals. They were meant to bring hearts closer and keep us balanced,” she adds.Bahnishikha firmly believes that when public figures talk about mental health, it can help dismantle stigma and inspire change. “Cinema and the entertainment industry have a vast reach. When people see their idols discussing mental health, they feel less alone and more open to seeking help,” she says. “It helps bring the conversation out from under the carpet and deal with it face on, as it should be.”In today’s digital age, the pressure of social media validation can take a toll on mental well-being. For Bahnishikha, finding digital discipline has been key.“Social media can be both productive and damaging — it depends on how you use it. I’ve removed social media apps from my phone to limit accessibility and now check them only from my laptop. It’s a small change, but it helps maintain a healthy balance.”Despite the virtual world’s lure, Bahnishikha remains rooted in real connections. “In today’s world, birthday wishes are mostly posts online. But I still prefer calling and speaking to my loved ones. That real connection keeps me fresh and happy,” she smiles. When it comes to maintaining balance, Bahnishikha finds solace in activities that connect her with herself — Kathak, yoga, and simple walks. “My life beyond the screen — my dance, yoga, and long walks — keeps me mentally and physically balanced,” she shares. “A good walk can do wonders. It’s something I think I should be doing more often,” she laughs. She also highlights the importance of celebrities being open about their struggles. “When people like Deepika Padukone or Alia Bhatt talk about their experiences with depression or ADHD, it helps others feel seen and hopeful,” Bahnishikha says. “It reminds people that if someone can thrive despite mental health challenges, so can they. That hope itself is healing.” Share this: Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook Click to share on X (Opens in new window) X Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window) Telegram Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window) WhatsApp Like this:Like Loading...
