Not comfortable taking up roles in X-rated shows: Akshay Nalawade

Shiv Shakti: Tap Tyag Tandav actor Akshay Nalwade, who is seen as Garud Dev in the mythological drama, is not one to give his choices a second thought and prioritizes content that resonates with dignity and purpose.

“I have turned down roles. Although I rarely say no to projects, I’m not comfortable taking up roles in X-rated shows. I’m a family-oriented person, and I want to be known for quality work and good content,” he said.

Before signing any role, he filters it through a clear ethical lens. “First, I assess whether the role respects human dignity—not just for my character, but for the overall narrative. I avoid roles that promote harmful stereotypes, unnecessary objectification, or glorify violence,” he said, adding that he has clear boundaries when it comes to intimacy or physical exposure.

“I respect my boundaries—creatively, ethically, and emotionally—because I believe that’s what makes me a more authentic and responsible performer,” he said.

Akshay is also a firm believer in presenting his perspective on a character and collaborating with the director and the crew accordingly. He said, “I always follow a principle: I discuss my perspective with the director and crew. Based on that conversation, I play the character as directed. I believe in working as per the director’s vision. I do offer my inputs, but ultimately, I follow the captain’s call.”

Asked for his thoughts on women-centric roles and movies, he believes there has been a shift in terms of gender representation on-screen. He said, “Films like Kahaani, Mardaani, Raazi, Queen, Tumhari Sulu, and Gangubai have portrayed women as decision-makers, fighters, survivors, and leaders. These characters are no longer one-dimensional—there’s real depth.”

“I do believe there’s been a visible shift away from stereotypical portrayals of women as just love interests or homemakers,” Akshay ended.
