Nagaland University Inaugurates Botanical Park to Preserve Rare and Endemic Plant Species Featured NE News Regional Beat by Akanksha - December 11, 20250 Nagaland University has inaugurated a new Botanical Park at its Lumami headquarters, marking a significant step toward promoting biodiversity conservation and environmental education on campus. The park was formally inaugurated by Prof. J. K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University. The ceremony was attended by senior university officials, including Dr. Abemo, Registrar; Dr. Albert Khizho, Finance Officer; Er. Yanrenthung Ezung, Controller of Examinations; along with Heads of Departments, faculty members, staff, and students. A Dedicated Space for Conservation and Learning Initiated earlier this year, the Botanical Park has been envisioned as a sanctuary for rare and endemic plant species of Nagaland and the broader Northeast region. The park currently houses: Rare varieties of banana Species of Zingiber (zingibers) Plants with recognised medicinal value A range of flowering plants added to enhance aesthetic appeal The long-term goal is to expand the collection to support preservation, research, and public appreciation of the region’s botanical wealth. A Space for Wellness, Research, and Biodiversity Protection Beyond conservation, the Botanical Park is designed to serve multiple purposes: A recreational space for university staff, research scholars, and postgraduate students to unwind after academic or administrative work A healthy walking environment, thanks to its open and natural layout A valuable resource for researchers and plant enthusiasts interested in indigenous species, taxonomy, ecology, and conservation A future hub for preservation of endangered and threatened plant species found in Nagaland Expert Supervision and Development From its inception, the Botanical Park has been curated and supervised by Dr. Neizo Puro of the Department of Botany, Nagaland University, who continues to guide its scientific planning and development.
