Manipuri Film ‘Boong’ Wins BAFTA 2026 for Best Children’s & Family Film, Puts Northeast Cinema on Global Stage

In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, the Manipuri-language debut feature Boong, directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and backed by Farhan Akhtar, has won the Best Children’s & Family Film award at the BAFTA Awards 2026. The victory marks India’s first win at this year’s ceremony and brings regional storytelling from the Northeast into the international spotlight.

Competing against globally acclaimed titles, Boong emerged as the winner in a highly competitive category—signalling growing recognition for regional Indian cinema and the distinctive narratives emerging from Manipur.

At the heart of the film lies the emotional journey of a young boy, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen, who sets out to reunite his fractured family amid the social and political tensions of Manipur. His search takes him to the border town of Moreh and across into Myanmar, accompanied by his friend Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum, while Bala Hijam portrays his mother, Mandakini.

Producer Farhan Akhtar, who attended the ceremony alongside Shibani Dandekar, spoke about his long association with Lakshmipriya Devi, noting that he had known her for nearly two decades and felt compelled to support a story from a region rarely represented on the big screen. Describing the project as “heartwarming,” he said backing it felt both meaningful and necessary.

The award was presented at London’s Royal Festival Hall, where Lakshmipriya Devi received the honour alongside producer Ritesh Sidhwani and members of the film’s team. In her acceptance speech, Devi reflected on the journey behind the film, saying the moment felt like reaching the summit of a mountain they never realised they were climbing. She also spoke emotionally about the unrest in Manipur, expressing hope for peace and for displaced children to reclaim their joy and innocence.

Before its theatrical release in September 2025, Boong premiered in the Discovery section at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and later screened at the Warsaw International Film Festival, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne—earning praise for its emotional depth and authenticity.

With its BAFTA win, Boong not only secures a prominent place in the highlights of BAFTA 2026 but also cements Manipuri cinema as a powerful voice on the global stage—demonstrating how regional stories can resonate universally.
