I make sure every poem maintains its literary quality while also being performative: Priya Malik

Actor-poet Priya Malik needs no introduction. Known for her live performances across the globe and been a part of shows Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen, Savitri Devi College & Hospital, Bigg Boss season 9 Priya shares her journey with us. She says,”I have been performing live since I was very young in school elocutions and debates. I was quite active in all the cultural activities during my academics. But I started performing my own poems over a decade ago. With competitions like the Australian Poetry Slam, and then professionally in India from 2017 onwards, I became a regular in the circuit. My solo shows vary, but they usually last about an hour and a half. They are a collection of my poems, performed under my name, showcasing my style and signature storytelling.”

Sharing more on the USP of her solo shows Priya adds,”The unique point of my shows is that I am completely in control. I write, direct, and perform everything myself. It’s a one-woman show, and the audience gets an authentic Priya Malik experience in every performance. I have performed in many major cities across India, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. At the same time I have performed internationally in countries like Australia and several other locations where the Indian diaspora attends poetry events.”

For any live performances feedback of audience is very important. On this Priya says,” Audiences respond beautifully. People often tell me they relate to my words deeply, that my performances move them emotionally, they appreciate the honesty and soul in my work. Laughter, tears, silence, and applause are all part of the experience, and every response matters to me. With that I try to improve my performances.”

Whoever has been experienced Priya’s live show they must have noticed her expression and choice of words is her biggest strength. On this she says,” Performing live is about connecting with the audience. My voice, timing, and expression are key to making the words come alive on stage. I enjoy the control and the interaction that live performance allows. The energy in the room definitely affects how I deliver a piece. Live reactions, whether it’s laughter, silence, or tears, guide me in that moment and make each performance unique.”

As a performer who writes and recites her own work, how one can balance the literary quality of the poetry with the theatrical aspect of stage performance?

She shares,”I make sure every poem maintains its literary quality while also being performative. The words must stand alone on paper but also come alive on stage. Being the writer, director, and performer allows me to balance both aspects perfectly, making the experience satisfying for both me and the audience.”
