Dr. Rita Chowdhury Announces 20-Year Cultural Fund in Memory of Zubeen Garg; Podcast Revenue to Support Emerging Assamese Artists

Renowned writer and Sahitya Akademi Award–winning novelist Dr. Rita Chowdhury has announced a heartfelt initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of artists in Assam. Speaking at a press conference in Panbazar on Sunday, she revealed that the revenue earned from a YouTube podcast featuring the late music icon Zubeen Garg—amounting to USD 2,909—will be placed in a 20-year fixed deposit. The interest generated will be used exclusively to support aspiring artists across the state.

Dr. Chowdhury said the initiative is both a tribute to Zubeen Garg’s monumental cultural impact and a long-term investment in Assam’s creative future. “This is our way of ensuring that his spirit continues to guide young talent,” she noted.

She also outlined details of the upcoming Brahmaputra Literature Festival 2026, to be held in Sivasagar from February 6 to 8, describing it as a celebration of literature, music, art, and human connection. The festival will bring together authors, performers, and cultural practitioners, reflecting the region’s artistic diversity.

Dr. Chowdhury spoke emotionally about her bond with Zubeen Garg, saying his music and personality left a lasting imprint on Assam. When asked about the recent chargesheet filed regarding his death, she declined to comment, emphasizing that the matter is sub judice. She added that work is underway to document and compile Garg’s contributions so that future generations can understand the depth of his legacy. “We hope justice will prevail,” she said.

Through this fund, Dr. Chowdhury aims to ensure that Zubeen Garg’s name remains synonymous not just with art, but with opportunity, empowerment, and inspiration for decades to come.
