Assamese Short Film Muga Wins Jury Award at Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival 2025 Featured NE News Regional Beat by Akanksha - December 18, 20250 The Assamese short film Muga has earned national recognition after winning the Best Short Film – Jury Award at the 14th Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival 2025, marking a significant achievement for contemporary Assamese cinema. The film’s festival journey has already seen notable success earlier this year, including the Best Editor Award at the 9th Chalachitramm National Film Festival 2025 in Guwahati. Continuing its strong run, Muga has been officially selected for the 12th Goa Short Film Festival and has also received a nomination at the upcoming 18th Jaipur International Film Festival, reinforcing its growing presence across major Indian film platforms. Produced under the banner of Trinav Entertainment, Muga is produced by Jayanta Kakati and Priyam Das, and directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Samujjal Kashyap, who also penned the story and handled the film’s editing. The screenplay is written by Pranab Baruah, while Nagen Baishya served as Director of Photography. Jyoti Chetia oversaw sound design and mixing, with location sound recorded by Rajkumar Rahul Dihingia. Hiru Borgohain worked as the Assistant Director. Set in Sualkuchi, Assam’s historic weaving town renowned for Muga silk, the film centres on Shakuntala, a young artisan devoted to preserving the traditional craft while caring for her ailing father. As poverty, mechanisation and changing economic realities threaten centuries-old practices, the narrative unfolds through her relationship with Jatin, revealing layers of love, conflict and betrayal within a community caught between heritage and profit. Through an intimate and grounded lens, Muga explores the emotional and personal cost of safeguarding craft, dignity and cultural identity in the face of rapid social and economic transformation. Its growing acclaim highlights not only the film’s artistic strength but also the increasing national visibility of stories emerging from Assam’s cultural landscape.
