AGP MP Birendra Prasad Baishya Seeks Bharat Ratna for Late Zubeen Garg in Rajya Sabha Featured NE News News Regional Beat by Akanksha - December 17, 20250 Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Member of Parliament Birendra Prasad Baishya on Monday raised a proposal in the Rajya Sabha seeking the conferment of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, posthumously on legendary Assamese musician Zubeen Garg. Raising the issue during the Winter Session of Parliament, Baishya highlighted Zubeen Garg’s unparalleled contribution to Indian music and culture. He noted that the iconic artist had recorded over 38,000 songs across multiple languages, leaving an indelible mark not only on Assamese music but also on India’s broader cultural landscape. Baishya emphasised Garg’s extraordinary versatility, describing him as a multifaceted creative force who excelled as a singer, composer, film producer, director and actor. Beyond his artistic achievements, the MP underlined Garg’s deep commitment to social causes, environmental conservation and philanthropy, stating that his influence extended far beyond the realm of music. Paying tribute to the late artist, Baishya said Zubeen Garg was not merely a musician but a social reformer and a passionate environmentalist whose work inspired generations. “On behalf of the people of Assam, the Asom Gana Parishad, and our party president Atul Bora, I urge the Government of India to honour the legendary Zubeen Garg with the Bharat Ratna,” he told the House. Zubeen Garg, widely regarded as one of Assam’s greatest cultural icons, passed away earlier this year, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the country. The demand for the Bharat Ratna reflects the enduring impact of his artistic legacy and his contribution to India’s cultural and social fabric.
