Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan Shift Focus to ‘3 Idiots 2’, Put Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic on Hold Featured Funtainment by Akanksha - December 15, 20250 Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actor Aamir Khan have reportedly decided to pause work on their proposed biopic on cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, following dissatisfaction with the script’s direction. According to industry sources, the creative duo felt the screenplay did not meet their expectations and chose not to proceed in its current form. Instead, Hirani and Khan have turned their attention to a project that has long been awaited by audiences — a sequel to their 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots. As reported by Pinkvilla, the script for 3 Idiots 2 has been finalised and is set nearly 15 years after the events of the original film. The sequel is expected to reunite the principal cast, including Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, who are likely to reprise their iconic roles. The narrative is said to explore where the characters are now, following their lives after parting ways, with the story picking up from the memorable Leh reunion that concluded the first film. There is currently no confirmation on whether popular supporting characters such as Chatur Ramalingam, Virus (Dr. Viru Sahastrabudhhe), Mona Sahastrabudhhe, or Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad will feature in the sequel. However, sources close to the project suggest that the filmmakers believe the new script captures the humour, emotional depth, and social resonance that defined the original. In parallel, Hirani is also reportedly developing Munna Bhai 3 alongside long-time collaborators Abhijat Joshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Actor Arshad Warsi, who plays Circuit in the franchise, recently indicated that Hirani is “seriously working” on the third instalment, renewing optimism among fans. Hirani has previously acknowledged the high expectations surrounding both sequels and has indicated that he is focused on crafting stories that justify revisiting these beloved worlds. According to sources, the director is keen to move forward only with ideas that feel fresh, meaningful, and worthy of their legacy.
