Northeast Frontier Railway Clears Silchar–Sairang Line, Paving the Way for Major Connectivity Boost in Mizoram

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced the clearance of the long-pending Silchar–Sairang railway line via Bairabi, marking a significant milestone in strengthening Mizoram’s transport infrastructure. According to officials, the project is set to be virtually inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma following the conclusion of the current Parliament session.

Future Extension to Hmawngbuchhuah Approved in Principle

NFR has also given in-principle approval to extend the railway line from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah via Thenzawl. Work on the railway alignment and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is already underway, reflecting the Centre’s continued focus on improving connectivity in the Northeast.

Tourism and Passenger Convenience Set for Upgrades

To boost tourism, officials confirmed that a Vistadome coach—designed to offer enhanced panoramic views—is under active consideration for the route. Additionally, Mizoram’s Inner Line Permit (ILP) system will soon be integrated with the IRCTC platform, enabling QR-code based verification directly on trains, thereby simplifying travel for visitors entering the state.

Improved Railway Services for Aizawl Under Review

NFR is currently assessing the feasibility of establishing a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter and introducing parcel services in Aizawl to improve public access to rail-related facilities. At the same time, land in Sairang has been earmarked for a long-term logistics warehouse, a move expected to support freight movement and regional trade.

Station Infrastructure Nearing Completion

Construction of essential facilities at the upcoming stations is expected to be completed within the next few months. Once operational, the Silchar–Sairang line is expected to significantly reduce travel constraints, improve economic opportunities, and enhance connectivity across Mizoram and the broader Northeast region.
