Maharashtra Makes History: CM Devendra Fadnavis & Lionel Messi Launch ‘Project Mahadeva’ in Mumbai

In a landmark moment for Indian sports, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and global football icon Lionel Messi jointly launched Project Mahadeva in Mumbai — a transformative initiative aimed at shaping the next generation of football talent in Maharashtra.

Under this programme, 60 promising U-13 footballers selected from across the state will receive a five-year fully residential scholarship funded by the Government of Maharashtra. These young athletes will gain access to world-class training, holistic development support, and — in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — direct mentorship and guidance from Lionel Messi himself.

Speaking at the launch, CM Fadnavis expressed his pride in hosting one of the greatest players in the history of football.

“It is a moment of immense joy for Maharashtra to welcome Lionel Messi. Guiding our 60 young players will inspire them to dream big and excel globally. We thank him for supporting Project Mahadeva and motivating our children,” he said.

Project Mahadeva is designed to identify and nurture exceptional young footballers across the state, equipping them with the skills, discipline, and exposure needed to compete at international standards. The initiative brings together several key institutions, including:

  • Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA)
  • Village Social Transformation Foundation (VSTF)
  • Western India Football Association (WIFA)
  • CIDCO
  • Sports Department, Government of Maharashtra

Cricket legend Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar and other notable dignitaries were also present, marking the occasion as a major milestone in India’s ambition to make its mark on the global football map.

With Project Mahadeva, Maharashtra signals a bold commitment:
India is ready to chase its football dreams — and score big. 🚀⚽
