Garima Garg Welcomes SIT Chargesheet, Expresses Hope for Swift Justice in Zubeen Garg Case

Garima Garg, wife of the late Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, has welcomed the filing of the chargesheet by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and expressed hope that the judicial process will now move forward without delay.

Speaking to the media, she said the investigation progressed on the basis of the FIR lodged by the family and unfolded largely as they had expected.
“We are grateful to the investigating agency. The outcome of the probe aligns with public expectations. Now everything depends on the judicial process, which we hope will proceed smoothly,” Garima stated, reaffirming the family’s trust in the judiciary.

Garima also appreciated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks indicating that the government may seek the Chief Justice’s approval to establish a fast-track court for the case.
“We want this matter resolved as early as possible. Our family is shattered, and the people of Assam are deeply disturbed that someone like Zubeen Garg could be killed. Everyone wants accountability and justice,” she said.

Addressing questions about international cooperation, Garima noted that the investigation is grounded in the family’s FIR and reiterated her confidence in the SIT and the judicial process. She did not comment further on the role of the Singaporean authorities.

Details from the SIT Chargesheet

In its chargesheet submitted in a Guwahati court, the SIT has charged four individuals with murder, including:

  • Siddhartha Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s secretary
  • Shyamkanu Mahanta, festival organiser
  • Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, band member
  • Amritprava Mahanta, band member

Shyamkanu Mahanta was the chief organiser of the North East India Festival, which Zubeen had travelled to attend in Singapore. The singer died under unexplained circumstances while swimming at sea on September 19.

Additionally, two of Garg’s personal security officers — Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya — have been charged with criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust in connection with alleged misappropriation of entrusted funds or property.

The case now moves to the judicial stage, with widespread public sentiment in Assam closely watching the developments.
