Assam’s cultural heritage found a moment of global recognition as India and Europe concluded a landmark free trade agreement, hailed as a historic breakthrough in global economic cooperation.

The announcement was made by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who described the pact as the “mother of all deals.” The agreement creates one of the world’s largest free trade zones, encompassing nearly two billion people, and is expected to significantly boost trade, investment, and strategic cooperation between India and the European Union.

Beyond its economic significance, the moment carried deep cultural symbolism. Standing alongside Narendra Modi, Ursula von der Leyen was seen wearing the traditional Assamese Gamosa, woven from Eri silk—bringing Assam’s identity into the global spotlight during one of the most consequential diplomatic announcements in recent years.
