Ranveer Singh will turn Cricketer Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan’s biggest sports film

Ranveer Singh will turn Cricketer Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan’s biggest sports film set to reminisce 1983’s World Cup victory.

When the entire country is awaiting breathlessly to behold his look for Rani Padmavati, Ranveer Sing has taken us by another storm  with an official news that he is set to play legendary Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev in a biopic which will be directed by Kabir Khan. Trade guru Taran Adarsh on Monday morning shared the news on his Twitter account.

The tweet reads “Breaking News: Ranveer Singh will turn cricketer KapilDev in Kabir Khan’s sports-based film… 1983 World Cup.”

The tweet also revealed that the biopics will be around the 1983 Cricket World Cup which India won. Kapil Dev, the then Indian cricket team captain, lifted the World Cup at the majestic Lords’ in London. India played West Indies in the finals and beat the World Champs to get the coveted trophy home for the first time.

Legendary Cricketer Kapil Dev is an inspiration to thousands and hence  it will be interesting to see how well Ranveer Singh portrays the former captain on screen.

Talking about the biopic, Kabir Khan said to Indian Express “Ranveer Singh is the perfect choice to play the sports legend. He said, “As a young schoolboy when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup, I had no idea that from that day on-wards Cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, the journey to that win filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalising the script.”

If the gossip mongers have to be believed then  Arjun Kapoor’s name was also in the running  though later director Kabir Khan confirmed that Ranveer Singh was his first choice for Kapil Dev while even during the scripting phase.

Director Kabir Khan  has already finished scripting the film, which will bring to light one of the most memorable events in the history of Indian cricket. The film title will be 1983, the film is based on India’s unexpected victory at the cricket World Cup when Kapil was the Indian team captain. India not only won their first-ever World Cup, they ended West Indies’ domination in the limited-over format of the game. West Indies had won two consecutive editions of the World Cups in 1975 and 1979.

Meanwhile,entire country is awaiting for  Ranveer Singh’s look for his next in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’. He will play Alauddin Khilji in the much-awaited period drama, which will hit screens on December 1, 2017.
